Martine was the daughter of Bishou Domincus, a cleric of Helm. She accompanied the Golden Legion in their expedition in 1361 DR that found Maztica. Her capture and death at the hands of the natives provoked the start of a conflict that led to the Legion conquering Ulatos.
Appearance[]
She had red hair.[1]
Life[]
She was in Murann with the legion in 1361 DR when they disembarked. She sang the anthem of the legion at the ceremony on shore before they departed and went with her father on the Legion's flagship the Falcon. [2]
When the expedition came to the Green Sisters archipelago, Martine disembarked and walked with Halloran, an officer in the Legion, on the island. While they were together, they were attacked by a Dragonne, but Halloran and several other legionnaires fought it off. Her father was gifted with a slave by the locals, and Martine was disgusted by this, claiming that Helm did not permit slavery, and decided that she would travel on the Osprey, the ship that Halloran was travelling in. [3]
The expedition arrived on continental Maztica near the city of Ulatos. Martine insisted on going with Halloran when they disembarked. He protested, fearing that it might be dangerous, but she nevertheless went with him.[4]
Mixtal, a local cleric of Zaltec had been hunting for a girl named Erixitl in order to sacrifice her to his god. Erixitl had escaped from his custody with the help of the Couatl Chitikas. In order to trick Mixtal, Chitikas used magic to cause Mixtal to perceive Martine to be Erixitl. Mixtal and a large group of Payit warriors came upon Halloran, Martine and several of the other legionnaires in the forest, and Mixtal then attacked in order to capture Martine, whom he thought was Erixitl. Although some of the warriors tried to stop him, since they could clearly see this strange red-haired woman was not Erixitl, Mixtal would not relent and brought Martine with Halloran to the top of a nearby pyramid. He cut out her heart and sacrificed her to Zaltec in the sight of Halloran.[5]
These events then led to a large battle between the Legion and the Payit, which ended with the Legion conquering Ulatos. Following her death, her father also blamed both Halloran for failing to protect her and the natives collectively for sacrificing her. His preaching became filled with talk of Helm's vengeance against transgressors, and he saw all Mazticans as transgressors.[6]
