General Matick was a legendary figure of the Netherese Empire, who invented many of the most popular spells used throughout the Realms. His known spells were: General Matick's missile, General Matick's shield, and General Matick's armor. He was also a rare arcanist of the martial arts and the arcane, like the later rebel Adrian Freeman.[1]
Description[]
The general was not only a skilled arcanist and inventor, but also a great warrior. Unlike most mages of the era, Matick was both especially strong and robust.[1]
Personality[]
General Matick was said to be relentless and aggressive, particularly towards elves, whom he disdained.[1]
History[]
Matick was born in 2238 NY (−1621 DR) of the Golden Age of Netheril. He quickly worked his way up the ranks in the army of Seventon and repelled several raids of goblinoids. An extremely successful commander, General Matick had the lowest ally-to-enemy troop loss ratio in the entire history of Netheril.[1] As well as eliminating over 35,000 goblins, Matick was said to have killed over 25,000 orcs, 5,000 halflings and elves, and 3,000 trolls. The general invented the well-known spells, the 1st-level magic missile, shield, and mage armor.[3] At the Pass of Humaithira, General Matick died in a last stand against a horde of trolls in 2298 NY (−1561 DR).[1][4]
Matick officially introduced magic missile in 2268 NY (−1591 DR) at age 30, shield in 2279 NY (−1580 DR) at age 41, and magic armor in 2284 NY (−1575 DR) at age 46.[5]
Rumors & Legends[]
Some sages did not believe that Matick had invented his wildly popular spells, but instead had them commissioned.[1]
