Mattrim "Threestrings" Mereg (pronounced: /ˈmɑːttrɪm ˈmɛərɛggMAT-trim MAIR-egg[2]) was a bard and Harper spy at the Yawning Portal in 1492 DR.[1]

Mattrim hid his true elevated skills as musician to maintain a low profile. He resided in the inn and used all his afternoons and evenings to spy upon Zhentarim agents and collect information about others possible troublemakers.[1]

In 1492 DR, [note 1] Mattrim befriend the barmaid Bonnie and, after discovering her secret, decided to help her.[1]

Some time later Mattrim was instructed to deliver a pouch of gold to a female half-drow named Cal'al Claddani in Skullport in exchange for her saving a wounded Harper agent. So Mattrim hired adventurers to accomplished the mission.[3]

  1. Canon material does not provide a year for the events described in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, but Christopher Perkins answered a question via Twitter and stated the year was 1492 DR. Unless a canon source contradicts this assertion, this wiki will use 1492 DR for events related to this sourcebook and Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage (which is referenced on pages 5 and 98 of Dragon Heist).

Mattrim's nickname originated from his use of a lute with only three strings remaining.[1]
