Melodia Thorm was a half-elf of House Thorm, a follower of Selûne, and the wife of General Ketheric Thorm, as well as the mother of Isobel Thorm.[1]

History[]

Prior to 986 DR, Melodia married Ketheric Thorm, and the marriage was a genuine love match. The union bore a daughter, named Isobel Thorm.[note 1] Morfred, the individual whom Ketheric commissioned to build Moonrise Towers, believed that it was through Melodia's influence that Ketheric converted from his previous deity to Selûne, Melodia's patron. At some point, Melodia died of an illness, leaving a grief-stricken Ketheric to raise Isobel alone, though Isobel would soon die after her mother. In his grief, Ketheric abandoned Selûne and turned to Shar, beginning a plan to eliminate all Selûnite presence within Reithwin, with this eventually concluding by 1373 DR.[1][note 2]

Despite this, however, Ketheric still thought highly of his late wife, and believed she would not recognize the man she loved if she were still alive. Isobel likewise shared his sentiment, and reflected she missed her greatly. Several busts, whether contemporary or not, with Melodia's likeness were found within Moonrise Towers as of 1492 DR, and one existed in Isobel's former room. Isobel also had a painting of her parents in her possession.[1]

Notes[]

  1. In Baldur's Gate III, Thisobald Thorm's relationship to Ketheric Thorm is unclear. When speaking to him, Thisobald refers to Ketheric as "father", though neither Ketheric nor his daughter Isobel Thorm mention a son or a brother, respectively. Considering that Ketheric and Balthazar resurrected Isobel, it is possible that Thisobald is another resurrected relative of Ketheric's and refers to him as "father" not in a familial sense, but as a religious leader or perhaps even as a "creator".
  2. In Baldur's Gate III, the timeline of Ketheric Thorm's story and Ketheric Thorm's war is unclear; however, it can be narrowed down through other canon sources. 986 DR is stated (Reithwin Necrology) as the year when a battle took place between Dark Justiciars and druids & Selûnites. The note only mentions Malus Thorm, not Ketheric. This suggests that the date could be an editorial oversight or simply mean that Reithwin had a cult of Shar active as early as 986 DR with Malus Thorm, an elf, as one of its members. The presence of the cult and a family member being a part of it would help explain Ketheric's quick fall from grace. Ketheric's family's deaths and his subsequent conversion to Shar would have taken place sometime around 1367 DR, as the Moonrise Towers was used by the High Heralds and Naernythra Thaloudyn as late as that year. With the High Heralds present, Ketheric's enforcement of Sharran religion and inquisition would not be possible, so this must happen after the Heralds leave; presumably, Ketheric ordered them out first. The destruction of Moonhaven is dated to 1371 DR (or possibly the following year)—this means Ketheric's fall and leading an army took place between these two dates. Lastly, Ketheric Thorm's war and its conclusion involved Khelben Arunsun, meaning the war took place before 1374 DR (the date of Khelben's death in Blackstaff (novel)). Notably, Khelben left the Harpers in 1370 DR, but his presence could be explained by the war's severity, forcing his involvement. All of these points indicate that Ketheric Thorm's war, his death, and the creation of the shadow-cursed lands took place circa 1372-1373 DR.
