Pondsmith graduated from University of California, Davis with a Bachelor of Arts degree in graphic design and a Bachelor of Science degree in behavioral psychology. He started out in the video game industry before moving into pen-and-paper games. He founded R. Talsorian Games, a role-playing company in 1985. He contributed to TSR, Inc. products for a brief period a few years after that.
