Mongrel was the pidgin language of mongrelfolk,[1][2] derived from the Common tongue.[3][4][5][6][note 1]
Phonology[]
In addition to elements of Common, Mongrel speech was interspersed with animalistic noises and cries,[3][5][6][7] as well as gestures. These included growls, whistles,[5][6] grunts,[5][6][4] and howls.[4]
Names[]
Mongrelfolk given names often mimicked animal noises,[5][6][7] derived from their uncanny ability to mimic nearly any bestial sound.[1][3][8]

Notes[]
- ↑ The Monstrous Manual, The Complete Book of Humanoids, and Curse of Strahd describe mongrelfolk as not having their own "distinct tongue", but merely speaking a "debased Common" or "fragmented Common". However, Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark denotes them as having their own language.
