Niri Alud was a conjurer from Tethyr who had a passion for chess and created his own magical chess pieces like the Black Knight.[1]
History[]
Niri was known to travel with chess sets on his voyages. Because of the precarious nature of the Realms, he wanted the ability to summon allies at a moment's notice without giving away his intentions. He created a wide variety of chess sets of different colors that would summon constructed, golem-like automatons to aid him in battle.[1]
When he was attacked by desert raiders in Calimshan, almost all of the wizard's chess sets were lost. The raiders, ignorant of arcane ways, let most of the chess sets sink into the sands. The chess sets that were taken were soon separated and the pieces traveled through trade and theft. Treasure hunters continued to search for the missing pieces of those sets.[1]
