The Nugha were a collection of native human tribes dwelling in the hills of E'sang Yi within Ausa Province of T'u Lung.[1][2]

Culture[]

The Nugha were nomadic shepherds who tended after horses and goats and lived in tent cities considered by some Shou to be crude, and they may have even had their own distinct breed of horse.[note 1] They had retained their traditions and resisted the "civilizing" influence of the Shou for millennia.[2][3]

Religion[]

The Nugha historically followed kio ton mu (witchdoctors), and, as of Shou Year 2607 (1357 DR), they were led by a kio ton mu by the name of Tenrax.[2]

Behind The Scenes[]

The Nugha may have a parallel in the Qiang, a conglomeration of hill-dwelling pastoralist tribes living along the historical western periphery of China with modern-day Tibet that often clashed with the various states and dynasties of China. However, the Nugha are geographically closer to the eastern periphery of T'u Lung with Malatra, and whether the Qiang were Jay Batista's actual inspiration in writing the Nugha or not is unclear.

Notes[]

  1. While this is never explicitly stated, the entry for events in the month of Kao II states that following a raid on the village of Chun Ki by unknown assailants, one man noticed that the attackers had ridden in on Nugha horses, possibly implying that they are a distinct breed. Alternatively, these horses simply have Nugha-style saddles, bridles, etc.
