Orvex Ocrammas (pronounced: /ˈɔːrvɛks oʊˈkrɔːmʌs/ OR-vex oh-KRAW-mus[3]) was a scribe and translator in Chult in the late 15th century DR.[1]
Personality[]
Orvex was pragmatic and mercenary in his choice of employers,[1] but he was genuinely eager to explore and uncover ancient secrets, even at great risk.[5]
History[]
Orvex was born in the mid–15th century DR, and was in his early forties and had begun to go bald by the time of the death curse.[1][note 1]
During the events of the curse, he worked for a Thayan expedition to Omu led by the Red Wizard Zagmira, although he felt little loyalty to these employers and worked with them solely for the good pay.[1] While investigating the Omuan ruins, he successfully learned to decipher the Old Omuan alphabet, allowing him to read ancient carvings that informed him about the Legend of the Nine Gods[1] as well as about the city's shrines to the Nine Trickster Gods.[5] He created a number of maps of the ruins to show the locations of these shrines.[4]
Eventually, the yuan-ti of Omu attacked the Thayans' encampment, killing most of the expedition. Orvex survived, but an explosion left him buried under a fallen wall, whereupon he was subsequently abandoned. He soon began suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.[1]

Notes[]
- ↑ Canon material does not provide a year for the events described in Tomb of Annihilation (or its tie-in media), however it is understood to take place sometime between 1488 DR and 1492 DR. The earlier date is based on the fact that Port Nyanzaru is stated to have gained independence from Amn nine years prior to the start of the adventure (p 15), which would be 1488 DR at the earliest given the city was firmly under Amnian control as of 1479 DR (as described in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, p 102). The later date is based on the presence of Volothamp Geddarm, who is promoting the in-universe Volo's Guide to Monsters during the adventure (p 24) but is stated to have concluded his promotional tour and begun a new book as of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist (see pp 5, 24), which is understood to be set in 1492 DR. Unless a canon source states otherwise, this wiki will use this range for events related to this sourcebook. The adventure is also assumed to take place concurrently with or slightly after the events of Storm King's Thunder based on the subplot involving frost giants in the service of Jarl Storvald (p 13).
