The Palace of the Moon was a temple to Selûne located in Caer Corwell on the island of Gwynneth in the Moonshae Isles as of that town's destruction at the end of the 14th century DR.[1]
Location[]
The Palace was located on the west side of the Court of the Moon, an expansive stone square above the city's port. A balustrade overlooked the water, lined with iron cressets for providing light, and a large staircase lined with statues of old heroes descended to the harbor.[1]
An alabaster statue of Selûne—wearing a veil and with her arms outstretched—sat atop a fountain in the middle of the Court of the Moon in front of the Palace.[1]
Structure[]
The Palace was a stone and yellow brick building. The front was a large portico characterized by a long colonnade atop a set of steps, behind which were arched stone windows.[1]
History[]
After Corwell was overrun by the fey of Sarifal following the Year of Risen Elfkin, 1375 DR, the abandoned Palace and Court crumbled, although they remained mostly intact as of the late 15th century DR. One of the arms of the Selûne statue had broken off by that time, and the fountain in which she stood was dry.[1]
When the crew of the Sphinx landed in Caer Corwell in the late 1470s DR seeking the Winterglen Claw, they landed at the Court of the Moon. It was here that they were greeted by High Lady Ordalf, Queen of Sarifal, who pretended to be a representative of the Claw. Her powerful presence caused the illusion of the area falling into twilight and the fountain to begin filling and overflowing. She offered them tainted food at a table in the Palace's portico, but only Lord Aldon Kendrick was fool enough to partake.[1][note 1]

Notes[]
- ↑ Canon material does not provide a year for the events described in The Rose of Sarifal, although the novel indicates that it takes place "more than a hundred years" after the return of High Lady Ordalf to Gwynneth in 1375 DR (ch. 1) and "nearly a hundred years" after the Spellplague in 1385 DR (ch. 3). While this fits the usual assumption that all 4th edition material is set in 1479 DR, the novel contradicts a number of other sources set during that year: at the start of the novel, Caer Moray is held by lycanthropes rather than by soldiers loyal to House Kendrick (as stated in Backdrop: Moonshae Isles), Citadel Umbra has been home to Prince Araithe for at least 12 years rather than being the base of his enemies (as stated in Backdrop: Moonshae Isles, the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide, and Realmslore: Sarifal), and Malar is stated to be "dead" rather than an active exarch of Silvanus (as stated in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide). These contradictions are largely resolved by the end of the narrative, meaning that the novel is best assumed to be set prior to 1479 DR. Unless a canon source contradicts this assertion, this wiki will thus assume that the events of the novel take place after 1475 DR but before 1479 DR.
