The Phandalin Miner's Exchange was a trading post and guildhall in Phandalin that purchased materials from local miners.[1]

Location[]

The exchange was located to the southwest of Phandalin, and directly east of a trail used by the local miners.[1] It was marked by a sign bearing an image of two crossed pickaxes over a lump of gold.[2]

Atmosphere[]

A lot of the villagers spent their time here, particularly those that had spent most of the working day around the countryside.[1] All business was conducted on the first floor of the building.[2]

Services[]

The company would purchase quantities of ore and gems from the miners of Phandalin. Each piece was carefully measured and weighed, and then its price was determined.[1] In addition, the Exchange had a wide variety of goods for sale, including some illicit goods for those on friendly terms with the guildmaster.[2] It was also the best place to purchase carts and wagons in Phandalin.[3]

It further functioned as a records office, which registered claims to specific parts of the land, such as valleys, streams, and excavations.[1]

History[]

In 1491 DR,[note 1] the business was headed by Halia Thornton, a Zhentarim agent. Although the local brigands, known as the Redbrands, hassled almost all the businesses in Phandalin, they did not even attempt to ruin trade for the Phandalin Miner's Exchange.[1]

The Miner's Exchange suffered from financial difficulties throughout the early 1490s DR because the flow of resources from the mines was irregular. It would sometimes go for months with no revenue.[4]

As of 1496 DR,[note 2] the business had been taken over by Sharna Quirstiron, a member of a splinter faction of the Zhentarim, who had killed Halia in order to replace her.[4] Sharna promised the local miners that she would turn the business around.[5]

Appendix[]

Notes[]

  1. Pages 30‒31 of Lost Mine of Phandelver describe the eruption of Mount Hotenow (1451 DR) as occurring "30 years ago", which would place the adventure in 1481 DR. When the adventure was later remade into Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk, this 30 year time frame was kept (pages 50 & 53). However, pages 103 and 179 of Acquisitions Incorporated, a source published after the former, state that the events described in the adventure happen five years after both Lost Mine of Phandelver and Princes of the Apocalypse. Since the latter is explicitly set in 1491 DR, and considering this answer by Ed Greenwood about dating the adventure, this wiki will use 1491 DR for events related to both versions of the adventure.
  2. Canon material does not provide a year for the events described in Acquisitions Incorporated, but Jerry Holkins answered a question via Twitter and stated the year was 1496 DR. Unless a canon source contradicts this assertion, this wiki will use 1496 DR for events related to this sourcebook.
