Pip Stonehill was a young human boy who lived in Phandalin in the late 15th century DR.[1]

Activities[]

Pip liked to imagine himself as a hero, and idolized adventurers who helped his family and friends. He also enjoyed playing in the fields southeast of Phandalin.[3]

Relationships[]

Pip was the son of Toblen and Trilena Stonehill, the owners of the Stonehill Inn,[1][2] and he had a younger sister named Tamara.[4] He was friends with Carp Alderleaf.[1]

History[]

In 1491 DR,[note 2] Pip's friend, Carp, told him that he had found a secret tunnel in the woods. The child barely escaped from the Redbrands, who had been terrorizing the town. Pip would sometimes talk to patrons of the Stonehill Inn, and may have informed them about the secretive place his friend had found.[1]

Not long after, Pip went missing while off playing on his own in the fields outside of town. He had spotted three encephalon gemmules and, thinking he should keep on eye on the strange monsters, he followed them for 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) until they became trapped in an old ruin known as Marthungrim's Home. Pip became worried that if he went home and left them there, they might escape and—at the same time—he might get in trouble for wandering so far from home. He ended up hunkering down behind a boulder to wait until nightfall to wait for help.[3]

By 1496 DR,[note 3] Pip was old enough to help his parents run the family inn.[2]

Notes[]

  1. Pip is stated to be twelve-years-old in Acquisitions Incorporated (set in 1496 DR), which would place his birth in 1484 DR. Subsequently, Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk (presumed to be set in 1491 DR) states him to be ten-years-old, which would place his birth in 1481 DR.
  2. Pages 30‒31 of Lost Mine of Phandelver describe the eruption of Mount Hotenow (1451 DR) as occurring "30 years ago", which would place the adventure in 1481 DR. When the adventure was later remade into Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk, this 30 year time frame was kept (pages 50 & 53). However, pages 103 and 179 of Acquisitions Incorporated, a source published after the former, state that the events described in the adventure happen five years after both Lost Mine of Phandelver and Princes of the Apocalypse. Since the latter is explicitly set in 1491 DR, and considering this answer by Ed Greenwood about dating the adventure, this wiki will use 1491 DR for events related to both versions of the adventure.
  3. Canon material does not provide a year for the events described in Acquisitions Incorporated, but Jerry Holkins answered a question via Twitter and stated the year was 1496 DR. Unless a canon source contradicts this assertion, this wiki will use 1496 DR for events related to this sourcebook.
