Purge Spellplague was a ritual designed to remove the influence of the Spellplague from an area or location.[1]
Effects[]
The ritual removed the effects of the Spellplague from a plagueland or otherwise contaminated area. It did so by requiring the caster to reach out with both their magic and their life force to pull everything in range—both living and inert—out of the Spellplague's corruption. The reach of the ritual was variable, and depended on the caster's skill: it could extend in a radius of as much as 10 miles (16 kilometers) or as little as 50 feet (15 meters). This area was instantly cleansed of the Spellplague upon the ritual's completion; however, there was no assurance that the corruption could not return.[1]
Components[]
The ritual entailed 25,000 gp worth of components and took thirty minutes to enact.[1]
History[]
The means to purge an area of the Spellplague was discovered by the wizards of Deep Imaskar sometime shortly before the Year of the Ageless One, 1479 DR, and was only achieved after extensive experimentation. The development of processes not only to cleanse plaguelands but also to remove spellscars was part of the Deep Imaskari's broader efforts to push back against the dangerous plagueland that surrounded their home. By 1479 DR, they were happy to hire adventurers to plunge into danger and test their countermeasures.[2]
Around the same time, the demon lord Yeenoghu had bestowed a similar but much weaker ritual to a tribe of his gnoll worshipers in the Reaching Woods. This ritual involved calling upon Yeenoghu for his protection from the Spellplague, and included words of supplication and an offering of blood. This version of purge Spellplague was co-opted by spellcasters from Elturgard during an expedition to eradicate a plagueland in the south of that realm.[3]
Prior to the Second Sundering, some mages could provide purge Spellplague as a service, although it could cost 150,000 gp for the ritual.[1]
