Rakor was a black dragon who dwelled in the Evermoors in the Savage Frontier in the late 14th century DR.[1][3]

Relationships[]

Rakor had dealings with the Cult of the Dragon.[1][3]

History[]

Rakor

Rakor dives right in.

Circa 1400 DR,[note 1] Rakor and a Cult of the Dragon army battled a force of the Uthgardt Elk tribe for control of the helmet of disjunction, a relic with the power to break all magic. In the conflict known as the Battle of the Evermoors, the Elk warriors outnumbered the Dragon Cultists, but Rakor more than made up for that by flying overhead and vomiting acid on the barbarians' ranks.[1][2][3][4] Stanhard ordered a retreat and entrusted the helmet to his fastest rider, Ven Salafin, to get it away from Rakor however he could, before the chief was dissolved as well.[5] Ven passed it to Xenk Yendar as he too died,[6][4] and the paladin would hide it away and remember the Elk tribe's brave sacrifice in defense of the helm.[7][note 2]

Background[]

Rakor's name was first identified in toys released ahead of Honor Among Thieves. He is the basis for the Dicelings Black Dragon and the Nerf Dungeons & Dragons Rakor Blaster. The product description Golden Archives Rakor action figure says "An ancient Black Dragon who once roamed the swampy Evermoors, Rakor is a vicious fighter with the ability to spew deadly acid on his foes," though this is not specified in the movie or novelization. The use of past tense should imply Rakor died before the movie's assumed setting date of the late 1490s DR.

Video of Rakor flying through a cavernous Underdark environment and breathing acid (okay, not actually acid) at the audience was played at the Tavern display promoting the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie at the San Diego Comic-Con 2022, as seen here. This was reused at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2023, this time breathing slime (yes, actual slime) on actors Michelle Rodriguez and Chris Pine, seen here. Michelle said it "doesn't taste too bad."

Notes[]

  1. The battle is undated but is "a century ago" from the date of Honor Among Thieves, which is itself undated but assumed to be the late 1490s DR. The Year of the Exorcised Helm, 1402 DR, is a likely candidate.
  2. It's unknown how and why the Elk tribe had the helmet of disjunction, nor why Rakor and the Cult of the Dragon wanted it beyond its magical and monetary value. The product description for the Rakor Nerf blaster toy describes as Rakor as unleashing acid breath on adventures who dared challenge him or touch his treasure, which, though standard procedure for dragons, is perhaps meant to imply the Elk tribe stole the Helmet from his hoard. This at least fits the Elk tribe's usual habits.
