Reithwin was a ruined and abandoned town located between Baldur's Gate and Elturel in the Shadow-cursed Lands.[1]

Description[]

Once a haven for worshippers of Selûne, the town along with the surrounding lands was consumed by the Shadow Curse unleashed by Ketheric Thorm, a former devoted Selûnite follower who eventually turned to the cult of the Absolute as leading general.[1]

Geography[]

The town was located on the banks of the River Chionthar to the west of Elturel in the Shadow-cursed Lands. This town could be traveled to from a mountain pass known as the Risen Road or through the Underdark (via a temple of Selûne). A toll was required for passage through the town. The Grand Mausoleum was constructed to serve as the final resting place of the Thorm family.[1]

History[]

Reithwin was founded by the followers of Selûne.[1]

According to the Infernal Mason from the House of Hope, Reithwin and the Moonrise Towers used to be a happy home to his then master Ketheric Thorm until a tragedy happened and his wife Melodia passed away.[1]

Circa the 1373 DR,[note 1] Ketheric had turned to the goddess of Shar to cope with the loss of his daughter Isobel. Forming a Sharran army of Dark Justiciars from the Underdark, the town of Reithwin became a battlefield between Ketheric's followers and opposing forces of Shar. As Ketheric was beginning lose the war against the anti-Sharran forces he unleashed the Shadow Curse out of desperation, turning the whole town into a darkened wasteland.[1]

In the year 1492 DR, a century after the Shadow Curse devoured the town, the curse was still lingering, and anyone daring to pass through would require carrying a moonlantern or being Sharran-blessed to survive.[1]

If the shadow curse were to be lifted by the Absolute Adversaries, people from the Cionthar Valley and Baldur's Gate were ready to resettle the ruined town mere six months after the end of the Absolute crisis.[1]

Notes[]

  1. In Baldur's Gate III, the timeline of Ketheric Thorm's story and Ketheric Thorm's war is unclear; however, it can be narrowed down through other canon sources. 986 DR is stated (Reithwin Necrology) as the year when a battle took place between Dark Justiciars and druids & Selûnites. The note only mentions Malus Thorm, not Ketheric. This suggests that the date could be an editorial oversight or simply mean that Reithwin had a cult of Shar active as early as 986 DR with Malus Thorm, an elf, as one of its members. The presence of the cult and a family member being a part of it would help explain Ketheric's quick fall from grace. Ketheric's family's deaths and his subsequent conversion to Shar would have taken place sometime around 1367 DR, as the Moonrise Towers was used by the High Heralds and Naernythra Thaloudyn as late as that year. With the High Heralds present, Ketheric's enforcement of Sharran religion and inquisition would not be possible, so this must happen after the Heralds leave; presumably, Ketheric ordered them out first. The destruction of Moonhaven is dated to 1371 DR (or possibly the following year)—this means Ketheric's fall and leading an army took place between these two dates. Lastly, Ketheric Thorm's war and its conclusion involved Khelben Arunsun, meaning the war took place before 1374 DR (the date of Khelben's death in Blackstaff (novel)). Notably, Khelben left the Harpers in 1370 DR, but his presence could be explained by the war's severity, forcing his involvement. All of these points indicate that Ketheric Thorm's war, his death, and the creation of the shadow-cursed lands took place circa 1372-1373 DR.
