"Revenge Among Thieves" is a short story by Ed Greenwood, originally an outtake from a chapter in "Elminster: The Making of a Mage".[1]

Sleep well, O princess of thieves; ye’ll be remembered with honor, if I live long enough to tell a minstrel.

Summary[]

Now the sole survivor of the Velvet Hands, Elminster decides to take revenge on the Moonclaws rival gang. Unknown to him, the Magister of Mystra, Dorgon Heamiiolothtar, has Elminster's friend, the thief Farl with him, alive and unharmed. The Magister kisses the dead body of Tassabra, another thief friend slain by the Moonclaws, and she awakens to life.

Elminster goes to the hiding place of the Velvet Hands, and discovers Orluth Angalaer, one of the Magelords of Athalantar, lying in ambush. He manages to surprise and slay the wizard using Tassabra's ring of the ram while he's busy boasting. Then he attacks Isparla, shooting one of her bodyguards in his head; they pursue and he lures them into a trapped warehouse, where his traps slay many before they decide to set the warehouse on fire. He barely manages to escape through a smuggler's tunnel, and sets Isparla's house on fire.

Isparla and the rest of the Moonclaws head over to their hideout, the Roost of the Moonclaws, in an uptown bath-house. Elminster follows them there, and kills one. Then some spell freezes them all in time, and a voice tells Elminster not to touch any foes, and that Tassabra and Farl are alive.
