Sands of the Soul, by Voronica Whitney-Robinson, is the sixth book of the Sembia: Gateway to the Realms series.
Summary[]
Ebeian Hart sneaks into the Soargyl mansion, intending to steal a gift for Thazienne Uskevren to help return her to her usual self. He sees the necromancer Ciredor talking to Rorsin Soargyl, and hears Ciredor boasting of having captured part of Tazi’s soul. Ebeian shatters the gem holding Tazi’s soul, but is captured and killed by Ciredor.
Shortly afterwards, Steorf finds Tazi and brings her to Ebeian’s body. Ebeian reveals that he was killed by Ciredor, who is once again seeking Fannah’s soul for some purpose connected to the “Lurking God.” The two find Fannah, who reveals the Lurking God is Ibrandul. They travel to Calimport, taking a portal that Erevis Cale tells Tazi about.
They enter the Calimport Muzad, the tunnels under the city, where they encounter the followers of Ibrandul, led by the Lurker in the Dark. Steorf quarrels with a novice, Asraf, but Tazi smooths things over between them. The Lurker agrees to help Tazi to the Dark Bazaar, a mysterious arcane marketplace, to find information on Ciredor’s plan, but actually sends the group into a trap, having been manipulated by Ciredor into thinking the necromancer follows Ibrandul. He convinces Fannah to stay behind.
Asraf helps the group escape the trap, giving his life in the process. A Grey Caller finds Tazi and brings her to the Dark Bazaar, where she learns Ciredor wants to present Shar with a gem full of souls, each from someone who worshiped her in a different form. Fannah is a former follower of Sharess, who was once controlled by Shar, so he needs her soul to complete his gem.
Tazi and Steorf rescue Fannah from the Children of Ibrandul. Ciredor tells the Lurker that Shar killed Ibrandul, and kills the Lurker.
Tazi, Steorf, and Fannah track down Ciredor in the desert. He successfully absorbs Fannah’s soul into the gem, but Tazi causes Shar to begin feeding on his hope that Shar will reward his gift, and he is consumed by his own goddess. Shar asks Tazi to become a follower, but she refuses. After the battle, she and Steorf realize that Fannah’s body has vanished.
