A sap, also called a blackjack,[2] was a type of light, nonlethal melee weapon used for knocking people unconscious.[4]
Description[]
A sap was filled with lead shot (small pellets), sand, or a similar material.[1]
They weighed about 2 pounds (910 grams).[4]
Weaponology[]
Saps were designed to deliver non-killing blows, usually to knock someone unconscious.[4] The act of trying to knock someone out with a sap was referred to as "sapping".[6]
Varieties[]
- Truncheon: A heavier version of the standard sap.[5]
Notable Users[]
Rogues[2] and bards were often proficient with saps.[7]
Groups[]
- The City Watch of Waterdeep typically carried around long truncheons.[8]
- All members of the Guild of Chandlers and Lamplighters were trained in the use of improvised saps, which consisted of a fistful of coins wrapped in a shirt or other cloth.[9]
- The security at Nurneene's Marvelous Masks often wielded saps.[10]
