Shadows of Sin is a tournament adventure module set in Malatra – Living Jungle using the Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition ruleset. It is part of the Living Jungle series of adventures published for the RPGA Network and part one in The Lacerial Trilogy. It is an adventure designed for 1st- to 5th-level characters with conversion available for levels 6st- to 10th.

The Council of Elders is in disarray, many of its members dead or wounded. Without the council to stop them, the Rudra now go to attack the lacerials. Are the Rudrans just holding on to old grudges? Or is there merit to their claims that the lacerials are not the friends they claim to be?

Summary[]

In the Year of Great Change (1373 DR), a war between the Rudra tribe and their old enemies – lacerial, was threatening the united people of the Living Jungle. Lacerials were accused of stealing the sacred vanilla plants from the unclaimed lands between the two territories. The heroes of Malatra were dispatched to broker peace between the xenophobic Rudra and the garuda-people. The heroes were joined by Rudra shaman Com'lak and Chief M't'lak in investigating the supposed crime. The group reached the vanilla grove, where they met minor nature spirit defenders of the grove – Timon and Pumba. After inspecting the "stolen" plants, it became obvious that they were removed with utmost care and respect and that one could not steal that which belonged to no one.

The group ventured to the lacerial village of Lilac where Rudra witnessed the garuda-people fraternizing with disliked yuan-ti, despite being technically allied with the Nubari tribes, and hated evil hyena katanga. After meeting with the lacerial elders – Starr, Swiftwing, and Trueblood, the heroes discovered that the vanilla plants were an attempt to cast a fertility spell on the dying out garuda-folk. Trueblood revealed that they attempted to ally with hyena katanga to gain passage through the Rayana Savanna to a crashed spelljammer ship to try and repair its helm. The spelljammer was the only chance the lacerials had to return to their homeworld. The heroes and M't'lak eagerly agreed to travel to the savanna in order to lend aid.

Joined by several lacerials, Trueblood, and their yuan-ti allies, the heroes encountered In-Twy-Da-May-La, a warrior of lion katanga with whom M't'lak locked in battle. Possibly surviving the ordeal, M't'lak and heroes reached the downed oscray spelljammer only to be ambushed by hyena katanga and their allies – spinning spider katanga and an army of deadly kretch, warrior creatures of the extra-planar evil of the Tamara. With some casualties, the heroes survived the battle only to discover that the spelljammer helm was beyond repair.

Notes[]

  1. The events of the Living City Ravens Bluff and the Living Jungle campaigns took place on a timeline that advanced together with the real world's time. Even though all Living City/Living Jungle adventures were dated with real-world dates and year names on the Malatran calendar, there were events that received a DR year. The Living City timeline can be derived from Myrkyssa Jelan's historic events of the late 14th century DR. Myrkyssa Jelan attacked Ravens Bluff in 1370 DR, according to The City of Ravens Bluff and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition; these events are chronicled in an in-and-out of universe issues of Ravens Bluff Trumpeter. This places the real world year 1997 as 1370 DR, and in 1998 (1371 DR). As the real world's months and the Calendar of Harptos are virtually identical, we can also date all events of the Living City Ravens Bluff as close as an in-universe month. Using that data, we can use the Legacy of the Headshrinker to date the Living Jungle adventures. The adventure features Malatran heroes traveling to the Vast and meeting several player character from the Living City campaign. Legacy of the Headshrinker takes place in 2000 – The Year of Great Change, which correlates with 1373 DR. This means other named years in the Living Jungle campaign can receive a DR conversion: The Year of Awakening (1995) – 1368 DR;The Year of Discovery (1996) – 1369 DR;The Year of New Peoples (1997) – 1370 DR;The Year of Gathering Darkness (1998) – 1371 DR; The Year of Sorrow and Hope (1999) – 1372 DR;The Year of Great Change (2000) – 1373 DR;The Year of Tigers Curse (2001) – 1374 DR;The Year of Despair (2002) – 1375 DR;The Year of Lion's Victory (2003) – 1376 DR.
