Description[]
Shields were usually made from wood or metal, and were used by combatants to gain extra protection. Shields were carried in one hand,[6] usually strapped to the arm that carried them. Smaller shields could be used without compromising the use of both hands.[7] Shields could be used in attacks to bash or push opponents, and some shields had spikes attached to them be more devastating when used as a weapon.[8]

- Tower shield, another large variety of shields that were nearly as large as their users.[3][10]
- Spiked shield[3]
- Medium shield[9][10]
- Small shield, shields that were larger than a buckler but smaller than a medium shield.[9][10]
