Shummrath was an unusual pit fiend in Avernus, first layer of the Nine Hells, in the late 15th century DR.[1]
History[]
Once Shummrath was a powerful pit fiend until he failed to show deference to Bel and the archdevil punished him by imprisoning the pit fiend inside a canyon of the layer. In time, only the mind of Shummrath remained inside a lake of slime but some water from the River Styx spilled inside, weakening Shummrath's mental integrity.[1]
By the Year of Twelve Warnings, 1494 DR,[note 1] Shummrath had only a memory span of thirty seconds and repeating just a single thought constantly. However, if freed from the Styx, Shummrath reformed as a pit fiend in 48 hours and tried to have his vengeance against Bel.[1]

Notes[]
- ↑ Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus is set in 1492 DR per the "Baldur's Gate Gazetteer" section (p. 159) and a clarification from the adventure's lead writer. Baldur's Gate III, which is a direct sequel to Descent into Avernus set immediately after its events, is also set in 1492 DR. In an apparent error, pages 7 and 47 of Descent into Avernus describes certain events as occurring "fifty years" after 1444 DR (1494 DR).
