Soup was a wide variety of liquid cooked and cold dishes eaten across Toril, usually made with a liquid base, which could be broth, stock, water, gravy, or milk, with added vegetables, meats, and various seasonings and herbs.[4][8][10][2] It was served in inns, aboard ships, and in royal castles.[26] Sometimes, it was thickened, puréed, or clarified and it was often eaten with bread[17][26][20] or ale.[27] Charitable soup kitchens operated in big cities, such as Arrabar and Baldur's Gate, offering free bowls of soup to the poor and the needy.[1][12]

Preparation[]

Perhaps the most common soup was a perpetually bubbling cauldron found in inns being cooked non-stop through the winters. They were made with roasted fowl and similar scraps added to boiling soups alongside vegetables. Fresh scraps, vegetables, and water were regularly added in as the soup boiled away for months at a time.[29]

Varieties[]

Hot soup warms the soul, she used to say. Probably little help to you, seeing as how you're a soulless bastard. You're welcome to your rations, if you'd rather.

Meat[]

  • Beef broth, a soup base that was often served on its own or with additional ingredients, such as a beef broth soup served with an egg and vegetables as a morningfeast at The Pampered Traveler of Waterdeep.[30]
  • Boar soup, a simple game soup made with wild boar.[31]
  • Carrion crawler soup, a drow dish from the Underdark.[32]
  • Dragonblood soup was a dish made of a dragon's blood and various vegetables, enchanted via foodomancy.[33]
  • Dragon soup, a long-simmered soup made with dragon flesh, onions, tomatoes, and milk, served at the Old Monster Shop in Waterdeep.[34]
  • Frog soup was a chunky soup made by Dekanter goblins of the Greypeak Mountains.[2]
  • Leek-and-hock soup was a delightful pork soup from the Boar's Head Inn in Ravens Bluff.[35]
  • Leek-and-leftovers soup was a general name given to a simmered concoction of leeks with various vegetables, meats, and cheese chunks from the famed Tabra's eatery in Bargewright Inn.[36]
  • Oxtail soup, a hot appetizer found in the Barony of Bloodstone in the Cold Lands[9] as well as in Sembia.[37]
  • Pea soup, a staple of the Dalelands and among travelers, available in Baldur's gate. It was a thick concoction of peas or split pea, smoked ham, and pepper.[38][1]
  • Peppered lizard soup, a dish that dated back to Castle Felmorel in the mid–8th century DR.[39]
  • Pork and cabbage soup was a famous dish made by Sot, the cook of the Laughing Goblin Inn in Phlan.[8]
  • Rabbit soup, a simple game soup made with wild rabbit.[31]
  • Rabbit, thyme and fennel soup, a soup found in the Moonsea region and the lands near Phlan.[40]
  • Sausage and morkoth soup, a variety of everything-in perpetual soup that was cooked throughout the day with almost anything left in the kitchen tossed into it.[41]
  • Smoked venison soup was a common dish made by the gnomes of Samek, on the Great Glacier. The soup was fatty and rich. It had a strong salty and smoky flavor of venison.[18]
  • Snake soup, a specialty delicacy dish from the Amnian city, Crimmor.[42][43]
  • Stagshead soup, a soup of mysterious ingredients served at Donder's Dancing Masques of Tharkar.[44]
  • Venison soup, a simple game soup made with wild deer.[31]
  • Welcome Soup was a robust soup from the Stargath House of Purskul made with cream, bacon, and black beans.[45]

Poultry[]

  • Chicken with rice soup, a poultry specialty priced as six silver per bowl from The Painted Boat restaurant in Ravens Bluff.[46]
  • Chicken stock was a broth served by itself or used as a soup base throughout Faerûn. Monksblade hamlet's morning soup was chicken broth-based and flavored with mushrooms.[47]
  • Duck soup, a common variety of soups found in the Realms, including being a table staple from The Silver Taproom in Essembra, the Dalelands.[48]
  • Turkey soup, an old recipe that dated back to the years of Athalantar.[49][31]
  • Turkey and wildfowl soup was one of the staples made with game birds at the roadside Calling Horns inn.[50]
  • Sage-and-pheasant soup was a soup served hot in Cormyr's capital, Suzail, and its Royal Castle.[4]

  • Blentra's oysters and wild rice in mushroom soup, a complex and delicious soup of cream, rice, oysters, and mushrooms from The Platter of Plenty in Marsember.[76]
  • Brine shrimp soup, an offering from Sharkey's Bar & Grill's exotic menu, priced at five silvers per portion.[77]
  • Clam chowder was a thick white soup made with clams.[46]
  • Clam soup from Kozakura was cooked with mushrooms.[21]
  • Cormyrian seafood soup, a variety of soup that lacked spiciness but was cooked with clams, mussels, and shrimps, spring onions, and lemon juice.[1]
  • Fish-head soup, perhaps one of the cheapest seafood soups made with leftover heads of butchered fish.[78]
  • Fish soups were thickened and served in tureens in Durpar.[79]
  • Fish and vegetable cream soup of Yeshpek was a variety of goat's milk-base soup.[80]
  • Fried eel soup was one of the staples in The Sleeping Cat of Wheloon.[81]
  • Mussel-and-basil soup was a highlight of the Moonstone Mask's soup menu.[82]
  • Octopus broth was more of a traditional offering of the Moonstone Mask's soup menu.[82]
  • Oyster soup was made with various species of oysters, such as river-oysters that were poached in the soup, served in Crimmor.[83]
  • Seafood chowder, a thick soup made with various types of seafood from The Shark Fin eatery of Ravens Bluff.[84]
  • Shark fin soup was a specialty of The Shark Fin eatery of Ravens Bluff.[84]
  • Spicy shrimp soup was a dish from Baldur's Gate's harborside taverns and inns.[1]
  • Squash soup, a traditional summer festival vegetable soup made with chicken stock.[15]
  • Stone soup, a dish from Faerûnean folklore, prepared using vegetables and sizzling hot stones.[15]
  • Turtleback soup, a green and briny soup garnished with cucumber, from the city of Velen.[85]
  • Turtle soup, a famous soup served at the Maided of the Moor in Mornbryn's Shield;[86] in Neverwinter, in both the Fallen Tower and Moonstone Mask,[87] and the Singing Sword tavern in Waterdeep.[88]
  • Vegetables and fish soup was consumed by the Ffolk of the Moonshae Isles. It was a hearty broth, served hot that possessed muscle revitalizing properties.[89]
