Upon casting the spell, the caster could hear any any sounds surrounding a target skeleton or zombie, as if they were standing in its place. It also allowed them to command that creature, with verbal orders up to four words in length.
If the creature left the range of spectral ears, a distance of 30 ft (9.1 m) or more, the connection was immediately lost. If the caster targeted an undead creature that was under the control of another being, any commands were completely disregarded.
