Swen Vincke is the founder and creative director of Larian Studios. Swen is the creative lead on Baldur's Gate III, which released in early access in 2020.[1][2]

History[]

Vincke founded Larian Studios, which was named after his dog called Lar, in 1997.[1] In 2014, Swen and his team approached Wizards of the Coast in order to make the sequel to Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. However, Wizards of the Coast did not feel as if Larian Studios had the experience to continue the saga. Wizards of the Coast would later approach Swen after they saw the potential in Divinity Original Sin 2. Swen, as well as his writers and designers, would produce the initial design document for Baldur's Gate III a month before the release of Divinity: Original Sin II. The document was later submitted to Wizards of the Coast, who liked the core concept of Baldur's Gate III, but overall wished for a new and improved version. Since the new version was created, Wizards of the Coast signed off on it, and Swen's studio began development of Baldur's Gate III.[2][note 1] The video game would be released in early access on 6th October 2020, after a delay of about a week.[3]

Notes[]

  1. On June 7th 2019, Larian Studios produced their first community update, which featured a jokey alternative version of the events that led to them acquiring the license to Baldur's Gate III. In this video, Swen Vincke donned a suit of armor and met with Mike Mearls. After distracting Mike Mearls by asking for specific details on a mind flayer model, Swen would knock Mearls out from behind. After Mearl's head had been hit on the display wall in front of him, he became unconscious, and Swen trapped his essence in a magical potion. He then made his escape and used Mearl's knowledge about Dungeons & Dragons lore to develop the game.
