Blackrazor is mentioned in Xanthar's Guide To Everything, in the Warlock section on the Hexblade pact. It identifies Blackrazor as a sword made of sentient shadows from the plane of shadows, hinting at some lore that seemingly hasn't been mentioned yet, but may be built upon later. - I'd say this is not so much "hasn't been mentioned yet", but "has already been covered several times". Blackrazor was introduced in the 1979 adventure White Plume Mountain for 1st edition, then redone for White Plume Mountain (Revised) for 3.5 edition, then again in Tales from the Yawning Portal for 5th edition, and in other reprints. So the description only has to be brief.
- In any case, it's most likely a different Blackrazor. The Baldur's Gate version has a different description and depiction, similar but subtly different powers (perhaps due to the limitations of the game engine), and no story attached that I can find. The BG games often changed the backgrounds and powers of named magical weapons. But the swords are from different settings: Greyhawk and the Realms. So no link other than inspiration can be confirmed. — BadCatMan (talk) 07:27, August 10, 2018 (UTC)
- The Blackrazor that you mentioned from the old adventure models may be from Greyhawk, but Xanathar's Guide To Everything is based on Forgotten Realms lore (Xanathar being the same one mentioned here on the wiki). So, the Blackrazor mentioned in the new-ish sourcebook could very well be related to THIS Blackrazor, even just distantly. I just thought it was worth mentioning, that's all, since it's still Forgotten Realms lore either way. Daft inquisitor (talk) 10:12, August 10, 2018 (UTC)
- While I haven't read it, 5th edition mashes all the settings together in the same sourcebooks, so the presence of Realms characters or lore in a book doesn't necessarily mean all content in the book is related to the Realms. By the same token, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes is presented by a Greyhawk mage, but has Realms-specific lore in it that won't pertain to Oerth. So we have to be much careful about what is considered Realmslore. — BadCatMan (talk) 11:07, August 10, 2018 (UTC)
Speculation[]
Does anyone think the appendix information about the sword's background should be rewritten or removed as speculation? I believe the White Plume info can be verified from DMG 5e but the comparison to Stormbringer seems unfit for the article. Ruf (talk) 22:17, June 25, 2020 (UTC)
- It's not speculation: Lawrence Schick, author of White Plume Mountain, said Blackrazor was "a blatant rip-off of Elric's Stormbringer". I think it's fair to have it as background for this Blackrazor, it remains the ultimate source of inspiration. — BadCatMan (talk) 00:28, June 26, 2020 (UTC)
