So, Geryon is in a bit of a unique position as far as lore changes go, because his are retroactive and yet, not.
Starting with 3e, Geryon's vestige (in the Tome of Magic) looked completely different because the writers weren't using the Dante's Inferno one. But in his 4e entry this was actually addressed. From his Codex of Betrayal: Once he’d been banished from the Nine Hells, and his domain given to another, Geryon took on a very different form in 3rd Edition. He appeared in the Tome of Magic as a vestige—a creature of forgotten spirit. Here, he’s described as three bodies joined into one.
Which would have been fair enough. But then, 4e being 4e makes it so he's always been a three-sided being (which I suppose makes his vestige make more sense in hindsight). So I have no idea where to proceed from here. Having three heads sort of screws up past events. 4E does retell his Reckoning story with no changes though.
But then 5e does what it does best and ignores 4e to give simplified versions of past lore. So now Geryon is back to having only one head and torso.
So the point of this diatribe is to ask, anyone have any ideas? I'm not sure if I can just separate the two versions of him because the vestige part was written into the story and they half explained the changes between editions only to ignore the retcon and change him up some more anyway.Vegepygmy (talk) 18:29, March 29, 2020 (UTC)
