Just when in the Realms is this source correct[]
I think we need to have a Realms reference date on our source documents. For example the big Forgotten realms book is true for 1372, however Volo's guide's are true around 1367 to 1369. Some of the information has changed. eg Hellsgate in Volo's guide is quite different in 1372. Hurtzbad 20:58, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
- If there are any differences like this, you can state what year statement apply to. If no specific year is given, you can use "circa 1369 DR" for 2nd edition materials, for example. This should only be necessary where details have changed in a future edition. We'll probably find that with the coming of 4th edition, a lot of things have been changed and need updating. For an example of this in action, see the first paragraph of the Marsember article, which talks about the population difference between 2nd and 3rd editions. Fw190a8 21:31, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Note that The North: Guide to the Savage Frontier copies whole passages from this book that include relative date references (entries on Olostin's Hold both use the phrase "About 70 years ago" and there's a paragraph about Mithral Hall that starts with "Over 175 years ago"). Assuming this is not sloppy editing (a big assumption), that would put this book at about 1370 DR, the same as The North. Of course, since these are not exact intervals, the current choice of 1365–1366 is not outside the realm of plausibility. —Moviesign (talk) 14:57, July 1, 2017 (UTC)
Another argument for this book being dated at 1370 DR is on page 176 of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition where it says that Goldenfields was founded 13 years ago, so 1372 - 13 = 1359. Then on page 43 of this book it says Goldenfields was founded over a decade ago, so 1359 + more than a decade ~= 1370. —Moviesign (talk) 03:52, December 8, 2017 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, a lot of date references like that get blindly reprinted from earlier sources, with or without alteration, so "X years ago" can shift with each new edition.
- The Candlekeep Collection article says Volo's Guide to the North (in universe) was written around 1365–1366 DR, which is the date we currently have. — BadCatMan (talk) 09:57, December 8, 2017 (UTC)
