The Council of Blades is a novel by Pauli Kidd. It is the fifth in The Nobles series.
Summary[]
Cappa Mannicci, Prince of Sumbria, and Blade Captain Gilberto Ilego defeat the armies of Prince Ricardo of Colletro, despite the objections of Blade Captain Ugo Sfarezi, who does not want Ricardo to surrender. Ugo and Illego begin plotting for power and steal the Sun Gem, using the theft as a pretext to start a war.
Meanwhile, a firebird steals some gems. Princess Miliana Mannicci takes the blame for the thefts and is imprisoned in a finishing school.
In the war, Ugo and Illego manipulate both sides to eliminate their rivals, but Ugo betrays Illego, assassinating Cappa and blaming Illego so he can conquer both Submria and Colletro.
Lorenzo Utrelli of Lomatra, Miliana’s betrothed, and the bird break out Miliana and escape to Lomatra. Ugo conquers Zutria using an invention of Lorenzo’s, trying to unite the Blade Kingdoms into an empire. Lomatra defeats him with the ingenuity of Lorenzo and Miliana.
