"The More Things Change" is a short story by Elaine Cunningham, first published in the 1994 anthology Realms of Infamy, and reprinted in the 2007 anthology The Best of the Realms III.
Summary[]
Elaith Craulnober shares an encounter with his betrothed Amnestria in the realm of Evermeet, his ideal life set before him. Later, after having been rejected by his moonblade, Elaith Craulnober leaves Evermeet and Amnestria behind, joining a band of mercenaries in Waterdeep. Decades later, circa the Year of the Walking Man, 1390 DR, Elaith, now a crimelord of Waterdeep, arranges for his daughter Azariah to be trained by Arilyn Moonblade, the famed half-elf assassin.
