It was a portrait of a female elf garbed in black with a purple sash, with a mechanical owl perched on her arm. The title "The Prophet" was etched into the frame. The subject did not appear particularly prescient.
"The Prophet" was found in the Merchant Guild Hall in the Neverwinter/River District[note 1] of Neverwinter in the Year of the Ageless One, 1479 DR, presumably having been left behind by the guild merchants or looted by the Many-Arrows orcs who occupied the district and turned the hall into a fortress. Although the orcs burned, smashed, or defiled all the artworks within, "The Prophet" survived curiously intact and left propped against some crates.
The painting is a stock item that appears in numerous contexts through the Neverwinter game, so it shouldn't be presumed to be the same painting or a copy in all instances, but only representative. However, this is one of the few named examples. Despite this, no more plot or lore is associated.
The image itself is by Neverwinter concept artist Chris Dien, who intended it to represent the original appearance of the warlock Nostura of the Many-Starred Cloak, as discussed here. Fittingly, the painting appears commonly in the Cloak Tower in the game.
- The Neverwinter MMORPG includes several locations and events in its Tower District that the Neverwinter Campaign Setting already established as being in the River District; thus, the Tower District is assumed to be the eastern River District. Moreover, while the River District Developer Blog for The Cloaked Ascendancy has a new River District south of the Neverwinter River, the Neverwinter Campaign Setting page 139 has it north of the river. For the purposes of this wiki, all locations appearing in the Tower District in Neverwinter are included in the River District and all locations in the game's River District are included in the Chasm.
