The Sickness is a tournament adventure module set in Malatra – Living Jungle using the Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition ruleset. It is part of the Living Jungle series of adventures published for the RPGA Network. It is an adventure designed for any level characters.

Long ago in Malatra's golden age, there were even more strange and wondrous sights than there are today. There were strange flying creatures and the fantastic inventions of the Ancients. Today only ruins of those cities remain, and of those ruins, most are undiscovered and/or warded. The few that have been found are known to hold strange things--things that the primitive people of Malatra do not comprehend...

Summary[]

In the Year of Sorrow and Hope (1372 DR), a group of heroes ventured into the Living Jungle in search of a perfect birthday gift to Big Chief Bagoomba. Their adventure led them to a Malatran plantmen village afflicted by a strange sickness. They agreed to investigate its source and try to find a cure for the village's shaman Staedt. The tracks of the infection led them to a landed massive boat from the sky, a spelljammer ship, piloted by L'riyt of Gobi Bank, an arcane. The wasting sicken was unwittingly brought on the spelljammer's hull, microorganisms that infected the water source in the area. With the aid of a translation device, the heroes of the Living Jungle found out that the visitor from the stars was not malevolent, and L'riyt agreed to help them. Together, they ventured into the ruined city of Donen of the Ancients, where the arcane's goal was. They faced an ancient petrifying monster, a guardian boalisk, but prospered. When the expedition was over, L'riyt produced the cure for the withering plantmen and departed Toril. The heroes missed the grand celebration of the Tribe of Big Chief Bagoomba but saving the lives of Malatran plantmen was worth it.

Notes[]

  1. The events of the Living City Ravens Bluff and the Living Jungle campaigns took place on a timeline that advanced together with the real world's time. Even though all Living City/Living Jungle adventures were dated with real-world dates and year names on the Malatran calendar, there were events that received a DR year. The Living City timeline can be derived from Myrkyssa Jelan's historic events of the late 14th century DR. Myrkyssa Jelan attacked Ravens Bluff in 1370 DR, according to The City of Ravens Bluff and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition; these events are chronicled in an in-and-out of universe issues of Ravens Bluff Trumpeter. This places the real world year 1997 as 1370 DR, and in 1998 (1371 DR). As the real world's months and the Calendar of Harptos are virtually identical, we can also date all events of the Living City Ravens Bluff as close as an in-universe month. Using that data, we can use the Legacy of the Headshrinker to date the Living Jungle adventures. The adventure features Malatran heroes traveling to the Vast and meeting several player character from the Living City campaign. Legacy of the Headshrinker takes place in 2000 – The Year of Great Change, which correlates with 1373 DR. This means other named years in the Living Jungle campaign can receive a DR conversion: The Year of Awakening (1995) – 1368 DR;The Year of Discovery (1996) – 1369 DR;The Year of New Peoples (1997) – 1370 DR;The Year of Gathering Darkness (1998) – 1371 DR; The Year of Sorrow and Hope (1999) – 1372 DR;The Year of Great Change (2000) – 1373 DR;The Year of Tigers Curse (2001) – 1374 DR;The Year of Despair (2002) – 1375 DR;The Year of Lion's Victory (2003) – 1376 DR.
