The Yardarm was a tavern that offered food and drink and catered mainly to the sailor folk of Velen, a coastal city on the Dragon's Head Peninsula of Tethyr in the late 14th century DR.[1]
Location[]
The Yardarm stood on Sarnsar Street next door to The Black Boat shop.[2]
Interior[]
The tavern's sprawling taproom was rustically decorated and always clean. Most of the time, it was filled with a cacophony of happy customers, conversations, and laughing. Brawls and gambling were exceedingly rare occurrences, which was favored by the staff and customers alike. The tavern only welcomed sailors and their lady companions, both escorts and girlfriends. Even though there was not an official ban on non-sailors, landlubber guests were met with silent stares that were likely to drive away most unwanted customers.[1]
Services[]
The Yardarm was somewhat unique among the establishments that mainly catered to sailors: it offered quality food and drink, which came with fine dining practices, such as clean linens, finger bowls of lemonwater, and attentive wait staff. Each table had an assigned waiter, parked at a nearby stool, ready to fulfill any request.[1]
The tavern offered beers, ciders, cordials, teas, as well as such staples as zzar, sherries, as well as outstanding wines, even elverquisst.[1]
The menu offered warm, thick, and filling turkey broth, drizzled with sherry on colder days. The rest of the menu was dominated by a variety of stews and pastries of shelled and cake variety. Some of the more unique dishes included dumplings and sweet fruit-based sauces that, for an additional copper coin, were added to any items on the menu. The Yardarm dumplings were filled with various kitchen scraps, meats or fowl, filled with their own juices. Another staple were pan-fried potatoes in lemon, garlic, and oil. Lastly, the platter the menu called Tonguelash, was a cornucopia of wine-doused endives, hopped walnuts and pepper, pears, and herbed goat's cheese. All items were prepared with sophistication fit for Waterdeep's fine dining establishments.[1]
Inhabitants[]
Rhaligo Terntevven was the tavernmaster in the late 14th century DR. His waitstaff was all comprised of homey lasses who treated all their clients as if they were their favorite uncles.[1]
