Thuba Mleen, also called the King in Yellow, was a powerful psionicist living in the Haunted Lands of Zakhara around 1367 DR.[note 1][1]

Description[]

Thuba favored wearing yellow robes.[1]

Relationships[]

Thuba commanded a pair of efreet by use of an enchanted bottle. He was particularly cruel to the genies, but spoke wisely when commanding them so they could not twist his words against him. The efreet planned and waited for the day when vengeance against their master would be theirs.[2]

Activities[]

Little was known about the "King in Yellow" as few who entered his presence escaped with their lives or sanity intact. He led a secretive life within the vast Haunted Lands.[1]

Thuba acquired the Book of Vile Darkness from a priest who visited him and tried to usurp his throne. Thuba enjoyed having prisoners read from the book so he could learn more about it.[3]

Possessions[]

He owned a pair of bracers of defense AC2, a ring of protection +4, a cloak of protection +4, a phylactery of long years, an efreeti bottle, a ring of human influence, and a pearl of wisdom.[1]

Appendix[]

Background[]

Thuba's title is likely inspired by The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers, or else by the play or mysterious entity of the same name referred to within. This has since become a common element of Lovecraftian horror.

Thuba Mleen is an homage to the villainous, cruel emperor of the same name in Lord Dunsany's short story, The Hashish Man (A Dreamer's Tales, vol. 1, published 1910).A Dreamer's Tales by Lord Dunsany - Free Ebook (gutenberg.org)

  1. Canon material does not provide dating for the Al-Qadim campaign setting. For the purposes of this wiki only, the current date for Al-Qadim products is assumed to be 1367 DR.
