Tree trolls were a small arboreal variety of troll touched by fey magic.[1]
Description[]
Tree trolls possessed sharp-taloned long arms and squashed-looking faces featuring long, proboscis-like noses that hung past their lower jaws. Their mottled skin was largely covered in a moss-like coat of hair.[1]
Personality[]
Tree trolls tended to be less malicious than untransformed trolls.[1]
Abilities[]
Though less potently so than their larger kin,[3] tree trolls could rapidly regenerate any wounds not caused by fire or acid. They also had preternaturally heightened reflexes.[1]
Combat[]
Unlike the more overt approach employed by their giant cousins,[3] tree trolls leveraged their propensity for stealth and acrobatics to ambush their targets. Once in close proximity, they dropped from their trees, latched on with their sharp claws, and started biting.[1]
Society[]
Tree trolls made their homes among the treetops. They sometimes organized themselves into gangs or bands.[1]
Summoning[]
A fiendish tree troll could be called forth by the spell summon monster III if the caster had the specialized knowledge required to summon such an unusual creature.[4]
History[]
In the High Forest, sometime before Year of Wild Magic, 1372 DR, local fey contended with trolls fleeing the Evermoors. They had been on the run from other giants for some years. In an attempt to turn the trolls into fey via a potent magical ritual, one tribe of pixies instead turned their targets into the first tree trolls, who continued their aggression unabated and ended up routing the pixies, taking their village as their own. In a short time, the changed trolls multiplied and started menacing the surrounding tribes.[1]
On Flamerule 7 of 1372 DR, Laspeera Inthré Naerinth addressed a report concerning tree trolls and other creatures found within Cormyr's borders by the Council of Mages to Lord High Mage Caladnei.[2]
