Ultrablast was a major psionic science of the metapsionic[4] and later telepathy disciplines,[1][2] that allowed a manifester to unleash a powerfully destructive wave of psychic energy.[4][1][2]

Effects[]

This power allowed a psionicist to send out overwhelming thought waves,[4] a horrid psychic shriek,[4][1][2] from their subconscious.[1][2] This shriek would penetrate and disrupt the soft tissues of brains within the blast radius.[1]

Prior to 1372 DR,[5] ultrablast had an effective radius of 50 feet (15 meters) out from the user. It would cause them to pass out and potentially caused such mental trauma to the psyche that any affected psionicist could lose all of their psionic powers. The only way to recover from such an effect was to undergo psychic surgery.[4]

The power also carried a significant risk for the user themselves. Ultrablast could potentially backfire and, if it did, it could either kill the psionicist that attempted to use it or send them into a comatose state for anywhere between a single day to a tenday. In the latter scenario, the psionicist would also lose all access to their psionic powers for a period ranging from 2 to 12 days.[4]

Following the year 1372 DR,[5] the nature of ultrablast was found to have changed. Its thought forms only spread out 15 feet (4.6 meters) from the user, only caused significant psychic harm, and no longer carried the severe backfiring risks.[1][2][note 1]

Displays[]

Manifesting this power produced a standard auditory display.[1][2] This took the form of a psionic "grumbling",[4][1][2] that was audible to both psionic and non-psionic individuals.[1][2]

Users[]

This power was knowable by psions[4][1][2] and wilders,[2] as well as ardents and divine minds that followed the Destruction mantle.[3]

Ultrablast was innately exhibited by amethyst dragons[6] and phrenic creatures.[7]

Notes[]

  1. In Psionics Handbook, the range for this power was given as "100 feet (30 meters) + 10 feet (3 meters) per level". In the Expanded Psionics Handbook, this range was revised down to just 15 ft (4.6 m), putting it in line with the power's Area of Effect range.
