Welcome![edit source]

Well met, WendolynCK. Welcome to the Forgotten Realms Wiki! Thank you for your additions. We hope to see more great edits!

The FR Wiki aims to be a valuable resource for all Realms fans, players, and DMs. As you edit, please keep in mind these five important rules:

  1. Use only official sources—no homebrew!
  2. Do not copy text from these sources; use your own words.
  3. Write everything in narrative tense (past tense), just like any novel.
  4. Add citations for any statements that you make.
  5. Avoid using the Visual Editor; use the Source Editor instead.

In case you need some help, here are some quick guides:

Advice and Assistance[edit source]

Hi there! Welcome to the wiki and thanks for your articles. Turmish is an area we need good coverage of. I had some advice and requests for you to help improve your articles. Take a look at the histories of articles you've already written to see how I've updated them.

When making your articles, please be sure to fill in the infobox entries fully, with name and the rest. Check out {{Person}}, {{Organization}}, {{Location}}, {{Conflict}}, {{Event}}, and others to see how to fill them in effectively. If you're trouble with the templates, we really recommend switching to the Source Editor from the Edit menu or set in your Preferences. That'll show you the basic wiki code, which will help you learn it in no time. The default VisualEditor really doesn't work well with templates.

When writing an article, start with a lead (or lede) which briefly introduces and summarizes the topic, has the name in bold, and so on. Take a look at any of other pages to see some examples. It's a standard wiki convention.

Moreover, please make certain that everything is referenced, with page number.

If you have questions or need help with something, don't hesitate to ask any of us! BadCatMan (talk) 12:00, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your advice and encouragement! I will be sure to do all of the above. I am new, and eager to learn, so will steadily improve in following the Wiki standards! WendolynCK (talk) 13:27, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Hello again. While you've made some improvements, there are still the same issues to address. The Illistine article needs some references (do you have a source saying they're all related and not just a common name?) and you didn't fill in the infobox.
You also need to make sure you don't copy any text, deliberately or even inadvertently, as this is against our Forgotten Realms Wiki:Plagiarism policy. While I see you've altered some phrasing, there are still some close similarities that I saw in Dempster Turmish and now History of Westgate.
For example, the FRCS 3e said "The largest of these was Westgate, a human town ruled cruelly by the great dragon Kisonraathiisar." and you wrote "The largest settlment was the human town of Westgate, ruled cruelly by the great topaz dragon Kisonraathiisar." which is still much too close. Then you wrote "Saldrinar destroyed Kisonraathiisar and became Westgate's first human king." which does no more than remove some information and switch to past tense.
I brought in some of the other information from the original texts, split the first sentence in two by topic (Westgate's growth among the others and then Kison's rule over the town), reversed the structure to follow the sequence of events and flow of ideas, embellished a bit, and wrote "This area of the Dragon Coast was first settled by humans from the Vilhon Reach around −1000 DR. They founded various settlements, of which Westgate grew to be the biggest. However, in time, the tyrannical topaz dragon Kisonraathiisar reigned over the fledgling town. Finally, in the Year of Bold Poachers, −349 DR, Kisonraathiisar was slain by Saldrinar of the Seven Spells, a Netherese wizard, who took over as the first human king of Westgate." That's a marked improvement, being more dramatic and original and more easily expanded with future information.
If you persist in this, we will take measures to block you and remove suspect work, so I advise you to go back and clean these up and take more care in future.
You seem to be jumping between different projects, Myth Nantar to Turmish to Silvanus to Westgate, and while they're all worth having, any one of them is a major undertaking that even I would flinch at and spend a few weeks or months on, not a day or so. This is especially a problem for new editors still learning the codes and styles, and we see a lot of them just burn out. Please slow down, take your time to learn the ropes and get things just right before moving to the next page, and get one project complete before picking up another. Relax, this should be fun. :)

Thanks again for the advice and feedback BadCatMan. I will take a deep breath and slow down, and focus on Westgate! I totally hear you about copying language that is too close. I will try to improve on this. I only want to hasten to say, I am not responsible for your particular example! That language was already part of Westgate, I merely moved it to History of Westgate. I also disliked how the original author copied too closely the original text from the FRCS 3e, but being new here, I didn't want to quickly delete it. I will get rid of more close copies I see. Unfortunately much of the Vilhon Reach areas has language that is far too close to the sourcebooks.
I will slow my editing and not make any new pages, just improving the pages I already have, and learn more about how things are done around here. I have sources for the Illistine family and will put them in, (Mulsantir is said to be distant family, and the others are a line of kings in Chondath). Anyways, please be patient with me BadCatMan I above all am willing to learn and desirous to make the already great wiki better! WendolynCK (talk) 11:11, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Alright, thanks. And I apologise for the false accusation, I didn't realise you'd done that. (Personally, I prefer to keep histories on their parent pages to keep everything in the one place and avoid repetition of text and work, unless the histories do get much too big, as would be the case with Westgate.) If you find any copied text, please bring it to our attention and maybe tag it with {{Plagiarism|''what's copied and where from''}} at the top of the page. That way, we can do some detective work, find out which past editor was responsible, and see how far the problem stretches. Then we might rewrite or scrub the page. And otherwise, be bold about rephrasing anything that's too close to the books!

And do ask if you have any questions or have any issues. Have fun! BadCatMan (talk) 11:54, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
No worries BadCatMan! I totally hear you on not splitting out the Histories and keeping things in one place. I'm perhaps too new of a user to be making those sorts of decisions. I just foresaw how the History of Westgate section was going to be utterly massive, given the sources that are out there, so made that call. But I promise I will really slow down, reduce my quantity of edits, and increase the quality. And fill out all of the infoboxes! I had been intending to fill them out, but was bouncing around too much, as you said! Thanks again for all of your work on the wiki and coaching my newbie-ness :) 12:09, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi, me again with some more advice. You don't need to make a small edit, then hit Save Changes or Publish, then make another small edit, and so on. This just racks up a lot of small changes that can be overwhelming for other editors to go through to find issues. Take a look at [1] and Special:Contributions/WendolynCK to see what I mean. You have a few hundred edits already.
Instead, you can use Preview to see what the finished page would look like, then make some more edits, and only save them at the end, and only have a few saved changes. If you're concerned about others editing at the same time (and we try to avoid it), you can add {{Working}} at the top to mark the page as under construction by you. Finally, what a lot of us do for big pages is copy the text to a program like Word and work on it at our leisure, without risk of losing it, and only copy back complete sections or the whole finished article at the end. BadCatMan (talk) 01:07, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
Ah, these are excellent points. I didn't realize how this was making so many elements in the history and making it hard for others to go through, but now that you mention it, that makes total sense. I will stop it forthwith! Working on a word editor first and bringing it in is smart, I will do that. Once again thank you for the advice BadCatMan and your patience with me! Welcome and a Few Tips[edit source]

Hello and welcome to the wiki!

I see you're making a lot of useful edits, thanks for those. However, you've left a lot of your earlier pages with quite a few errors, such as Church of Silvanus. There are several major errors (large red text throughout the main body of the article), other reference errors, and no in-line citations for some sections, etc. Could you please fix these pages before moving on? Thank you very much! ~ Possessed Priest (talk) 15:31, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the encouragement and advice! Yes I am new and learning the syntax. I will be sure to go back and clean up my earlier mistake-ridden edits! WendolynCK (talk) 15:45, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
