Utgard-Loki was the frost giant ruler of Jotunheim's major city of Utgard,[1][2][5][note 1] a son of the giant god Thrym,[3] and one of the most powerful giant spellcasters in that layer of Ysgard.[2]

Activities[]

Utgard-Loki kept the council of jarls that ruled under him in Utgard in-line through a combination of sheer force of will.[6] and cunning wit, rather than the tactic of mere brute strength that many other frost giants relied upon.[1] Through his prowess as both a cleric and illusionist, he used a combination of divine and arcane magic to protect his city,[1][5] making it heavily defended and camouflaged.[5][6]

Relationships[]

Among the philosophical planar factions, Utgard-Loki was aligned with the Fated.[2]

History[]

Utgard-Loki's magical prowess was so great that over the years he had on more than one occasion beaten members of the Norse pantheon in conflicts,[2] including having fooled the Norse gods Loki and Thor with his illusions.[1] Over time he gained a great deal of nephews,[7] one of whom was the frost giant Habrok Icecaster, who would come to sit as one of his many jarls in Utgard.[8]

In the Year of Wild Magic, 1372 DR,[note 2] a group of adventurers from the city of Ravens Bluff on the world of Toril traveled to Ysgard in search of the legendary Well of Mimir.[9] While passing through the layer of Jotunheim they encountered Utgard-Loki's nephew Habrok, out hunting with six friends, who told them of his uncle's power and greatness.[8] They also encountered Torheim, a proxy of the Norse god Thor, who expressed wanting their help in a later scheme he was devising to utterly embarrass Utgard-Loki[10] and offered them a coin to give to the Well of Mimir's guardian if they could slay one of Utgard-Loki's nephews.[7]

Notes[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Predating the Planescape setting, in Dragon #110's article "For better or Norse: I" he is identified as being a frost giant. Eight years later in the The Book of Chaos, part of the Planes of Chaos boxset, Utgard-Loki was identified as being a mountain giant. However, the later Realms source Three Coins in a Well refers to Utgard-Loki as being both a son of Thrym (god of frost giants) and as being the uncle to a frost giant jarl, which would indicate that he himself is a frost giant. Though organized play content is considered a lower tier of canon, it being a Realms source takes precedence, thus Utgard-Loki is considered to be a frost giant.
  2. The events of the Living City Ravens Bluff campaign took place on a timeline that advanced together with the real world's time. Even though all Living City adventures and issues of Ravens Bluff Trumpeter were dated with real-world dates, there were events that received a DR year. The Living City timeline can be derived from Myrkyssa Jelan's historic events of the late 14th century DR. Myrkyssa Jelan attacked Ravens Bluff in 1370 DR, according to The City of Ravens Bluff and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition; these events are chronicled in an in-and-out of universe issues of Ravens Bluff Trumpeter. This places the real world year 1997 as 1370 DR, and in 1998 (1371 DR), Myrkyssa was at last arrested and tried and said to have been executed, only to reappear in 1372 DR in The City of Ravens novel. As the real world's months and the Calendar of Harptos are virtually identical, we can also date all events of the Living City Ravens Bluff as close as an in-universe month.
