Varken Hallos was a mage agent of the Zhentarim who resided in the city of Ravens Bluff in the late 14th century DR.[1]

History[]

Varken Hallos rented a small apartment in Ravens Bluff sometime before the Year of Lightning Storms, 1374 DR[note 1]. He kept his affiliation with the hated Zhentarim secret and worked covertly to further the organization's goals as a hireling and a middleman. On the 16th of Flamerule, Varken was tasked by infuriated Zhent Threll Whitebane to find a band of adventurers or mercenaries to recover a lockbox with a Book of Vile Darkness from the House of Mystery of Ravens Bluff. Servants of Mystra, in turn, stole the Baneinte Book of Vile Darkness earlier the same day from the Black Network. Varken Hallos instructed mercenaries with written instructions: "Recover the tome at any cost. You must get it to Keldar's Shrine." One of the mercenaries was Ulijaz Thenumbrin, who was offered hundreds of golden pieces upfront and thousands later upon the book's delivery. None of Varken's mercenaries knew of the mage's name and only knew of his apartment address and description. He used the whispering wind wind spell to communicate with his men.[1][2] However, Varken's attempts were unsuccessful and a band of goodly adventurers succeeded in delivering the Book of Vile Darkness to an extra-dimensional vault in the village of Dragon Falls.[3]

Notes[]

  1. The events of the Living City Ravens Bluff campaign took place on a timeline that advanced together with the real world's time. Even though all Living City adventures and issues of Ravens Bluff Trumpeter were dated with real-world dates, there were events that received a DR year. The Living City timeline can be derived from Myrkyssa Jelan's historic events of the late 14th century DR. Myrkyssa Jelan attacked Ravens Bluff in 1370 DR, according to The City of Ravens Bluff and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting 3rd edition; these events are chronicled in an in-and-out of universe issues of Ravens Bluff Trumpeter. This places the real world year 1997 as 1370 DR, and in 1998 (1371 DR), Myrkyssa was at last arrested and tried and said to have been executed, only to reappear in 1372 DR in The City of Ravens novel. As the real world's months and the Calendar of Harptos are virtually identical, we can also date all events of the Living City Ravens Bluff as close as an in-universe month.
